Secret-code clues add a puzzle step before players identify the next location. A good code is consistent, includes enough information to begin, and can be solved with paper and pencil rather than specialized knowledge.

Start with a complete key
For first-time players, include the entire alphabet or number key on the card. Experienced teams may receive only a few examples and infer the rest. Keep spaces between words so decoding does not become tedious.
Use short answer phrases
Encode the hiding place rather than a full paragraph. “UNDER THE COUCH” or “CHECK THE MAILBOX” gives players a satisfying result without requiring them to decode dozens of letters before moving.
